Revealing Untold Stories: The Role of Cleveland’s African American Community in Protecting Land and Creating Camping Experiences in the Cuyahoga Valley

This project will reveal untold stories and strengthen a partnership with one of only four African-American owned and operated residential camps in the United States. The Phillis Wheatley Association established Camp Mueller in the Cuyahoga Valley in the 1930s, decades before Cuyahoga Valley National Park was established in 1974. Through this project, we will collect oral histories with camp participants, create podcasts based on the oral histories, develop a digital database to inform future park interpretation, and build a base for future program collaboration.
